Mind Sliver
Sorcerer, Warlock, Wizard - Cantrip Level Spell
School: Enchantment
Casting Time: 1 Action
Range: 60 ft
Components: Verbal
Duration: 1 Round
Attack/Save: INT
Reference: UA SAW 4
You drive a disorienting spike of psychic energy into the mind of one creature you can see within range. The target must make an Intelligence saving throw. Unless the saving throw is successful, the target takes 1d6 psychic damage, and the first time it makes a saving throw before the end of your next turn, it must roll a d4 and subtract the number rolled from the save.
This spell’s damage increases by 1d6 when you reach certain levels: 5th level (2d6), 11th level (3d6), and 17th level (4d6).
My Comments: You know, at first I was disappointed that Psionicist wasn’t going to be it’s own class but the truth is, it doesn’t really “fit” the feel of D&D so much. I honestly think it works better to slip Psionics into the existing classes (and the Aberrant Mind sorcerer is pretty cool, IMHO.)
Is it a good spell, though?
My take is yes, because it’s a handy damage cantrip that targets intelligence and has a secondary effect. The d4 “mini-Bane” might not seem like much, but given this is a cantrip it can be pretty handy. Be sure and pair up with another spell caster and shove one of these into the minotaur’s brain and then let your friend drop in an Acid Splash with much better chance of damage.
Or use some metamagic and do it all on your own. 🙂
